Cognitive Computing is Advancing (£)
Cognitive computing has been promoted and linked to IBM, but should not be left to IBM and other specialists, as its potential and its effects will affect all businesses in different ways even if most people at present are often unaware of its potential.
Cognitive computing is defined as using different methods of computing analysis to understand and use software to go deeply into the structure of data and change its use much more effectively than solely human work has done in the past. When employees have been used to do this analysis in the past and still when they do it currently it takes far longer and is not as effective in the short and long run as cognitive computing.
Cognitive computing can analyses the effectiveness of the data and use it to understand marketplaces or competition in far more effective and faster ways which will be of continuous and timely use to the commercial organisation making it work.
The effects of the new electronic age on society, organisations and individuals will be analysed in these reports but, what should be understood by you, and your employees is that the effects on commerce and the current markets that you are working in will be revolutionised by such techniques and systems as cognitive computing and should therefore be understood by your business for the competitive advantage that the process offers.
IBM’s original idea was that a computer could be used to think like and better than a human employee or competitors.
An early business customer of IBM that used cognitive computing before IBM created their cognitive Watson Division was Welltok and its CaféWell business helps their consumers to become healthier in the ways they eat, drink and exercise. Sponsored by healthcare insurers and providers, Welltok was also the first company to receive support from IBM’s Watson fund.
“We saw the opportunity to add a layer of intelligence and other capabilities to the application,” says co-founder Jeff Cohen. “Adding cognitive computing enables us to provide even more relevant recommendations to consumers, to connect with them at a more personal level and to modify those recommendations as the system learns more about the person.”
The addition of IBM Watson into CaféWell created the CaféWell Concierge application, which lets consumers use natural language to interact with it, get recommendations on a variety of topics ranging from condition management to healthy dining options and benefit information, and allows Welltok to provide a personal health concierge for every eligible consumer.
This process can be thoughtfully applied to many different business areas and can create opportunities and commercial success when used to analyse large data banks.
