Cristiano Ronaldo Has A Billion Social Media Followers

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has more that 1 billion total followers on his different social media accounts, making him the first individual to acheive that remarkable global reach.

That number equates to 12% of the entire human population and around 20% of all users of social media worlwide. 

The billion figure comprises the total number of his followers across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the Chinese social media sites Weibo and Kuaishou, however, it might not equate to one billion individual followers, as many people will follow him across multiple platforms, and some may be fake accounts, or bots.

On the pitch, Ronaldo was famed for his goal-scoring talent at the top level of the sport. Off the  field, there is no competition from the other global football star,Lionel Messi, who has only  623 million followers. Ronaldo is also in front of some of the biggest names in entertainment, including the pop stars, Justin Bieber who has 607 million and Taylor Swift with 574 million followers.

Part of the reason the footballer crossed the 1bn boundary first comes down to his decision to join YouTube last month, where his channel rocketed to 50 million subscribers within a single week. 

To date, Ronaldo's channel consists mainly of conversations between him and his wife Georgina Rodríguez, as well as his former Manchester United colleague Rio Ferdinand. But all his content on this platform has been tailored for an English-speaking audience,  and even when Ronaldo is talking in Spanish or Portuguese, the videos are often in English.  

In addition to his professional pay and earnings from endorsements, his income is being supplemented by social media from his share of adjacent advertising, and  Ronaldo’s total earnings are estimated to be $260 million, surpassing any other athlete or pop star.
