Gambling Websites Under Attack
Customers of two on-line gambling platforms, Paddy Power and Betfair, have been told that they have been hacked in an exploit that has affected about 800,000 users. Flutter Entertainment, which owns the online gambling brands, confirmed it had been hacked and personal information including IP addresses, email addresses, and online activity data has been compromised.
The firm has given the hacked users online safety information and said: "There is nothing you need to do in response to this incident, however we recommend you remain vigilant."
Flutter Entertainment has 4.2 million average monthly players across all its brands in the UK and Ireland including Sky Bet and Tombola. The company said the incident has now been contained and that no passwords, ID documents or usable card or payment details were impacted. However, cyber security experts have warned the breached data could be used to target unsuspecting customers with convincing personal emails in what's known as a spear phishing attack.
Users are urged to exercise extreme caution and verify the authenticity of any suspicious communications, especially those prompting them to share personal or financial information.
In 2010 Paddy Power customers were also hacked when the personal details of 650K customers information was stolen from the company’s computer systems. This event highlights the ongoing cyber security challenges facing the online gambling industry, with recent attacks targeting other major organisations.
