Germany’s Christian Democratic Party Attacked

One week before the forthcoming coming elections for the European Parliament, Germany's leading opposition party the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been hit by a major cyber attack and the CDU has taken aspects of its IT-infrastructure offline as a precautionary measure.

Experts from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the BfV domestic intelligence service were “intensively involved in fending off the attack”, said a spokesman from the interior ministry.

"There was a serious cyber attack on the CDU network," Germany's Interior Ministry said in a statement, adding security authorities were working intensively to fend off and investigate the attack, and prevent further damage.

The nature of the attack suggested that a “very professional actor” was involved, he said, adding that investigators were battling to prevent further damage. The ministry did not disclose any details about the scope of the attack or the suspected perpetrators. "However, the manner in which the attack was carried out points to a very professional actor," it said.

News of the attack comes after a recent major European sting operation targeting international cybercrime led to multiple arrests.

The ministry said security authorities have ramped up all protective measures against digital and hybrid threats, adding that the incident showed how important this was, particularly ahead of the June 6th - 9th EU elections.
