Google AI Makes Embarrassing Errors

Google has attracted derision after its proprietary Artificial Intelligence, AI Overview, produced inaccurate and some cases bizarre answers to questions posed by users. These  included telling users to eat one rock per day, and mix pizza cheese with glue. 

Comically, AI Overview gave specific recipe advices: "You can also add about ⅛ cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness." That particular recommendation is reported to have originated from a joke on Reddit posted 11 years ago.

Google’s AI Overview ws introduced across the US recently and became available to some users in the UK in April 2024. Although AI Overview is designed to make searching for information simpler, examples of its erratic behaviour  have spread across social media. 

In a separate development, OpenAI's latest iteration of ChatGPT was criticised by Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson for using a voice 'eerily similar' to her own.

In other examples, AI Overview claimed that former US president Barack Obama is Muslim. While President Obama was in office, there were multiple untrue conspiracy theories that he secretly practised Islam despite being a Christian. Another response told users only 17 of the 42 US presidents were white. 

Google says these answers aren't representative of how the tool is working in general. According to a Google spokesperson, these were "isolated examples".  Google has insisted that the viral answers are the result of "very uncommon queries", and that the AI is otherwise working as intended.
