There have been large scale cyber attacks on two Iranian government institutions according to official sources in Tehran, although no details of the targets or the suspected attackers have been given. It is reported that some Iranian government operations had shut down Internet services as a precaution.

A spokesman from the Iran’s national Information Technology agency told the Iranian state TV 'important and on a large scale” cyber attacks began on 12th October and continued for a further 24hours. Iran says it is on high alert for online attacks.

US officials said in October 2019 that the US had carried out a cyber attack on Iran after drone strikes on Saudi oil facilities, which Washington and Riyadh blamed on Tehran. Iran denied involvement in the attacks, which were claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. The United States and other Western powers have also accused Iran of trying to disrupt and break into their networks.

Israel’s security firms and agencies have reportedly been preparing for a potential Iran-linked cyberattacks in retaliation.

The US Presisdent Trump has previously warned that Washington is aiming to physically attack 52 Iranian sites and will hit them “very fast and very hard” if the Islamic republic attacks American personnel or assets. Tensions between Tehran and Washington have escalated since 2018 when US President Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and re-imposed sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy.
