New Cyber Security Programme For British Schools
British schools are being encouraged by the government to take advantage of free resources to boost cyber skills and set up aspiring young people to aim for careers in cyber security.
Over 50,000 students from 2,000 schools around the country will be offered access to the UK government programme that aims to boost the cyber workforce, engaging children with digital skills and cyber security courses.
Cyber Explorers is a series of free lessons for young students run by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Students will be able to explore a variety of engaging and challenging cyber scenarios, collect virtual badges, and learn tips and tricks from the Cyber Ranger and experts in the Cyber Squad.
Through interactive quizzes and activities they will learn how digital, computing, and cyber skills can help them navigate the online world and unlock exciting new career paths, ranging from social media content creation to medical research, and sports technology to AI innovation.
- Experts webinars will be on the programme, with a lesson on coding led by Coding Black Females founder Charlene Hunter MBE and Teach the Nation to Code founder Shafeeq Muhammad.
- The 2022/23 programme is aimed at key stage 2 and 3 students, with a particular focus on fostering cyber skills in 11-14-year-olds before they select their GCSEs.
In addition to the positive skills taught through the lessons and material, the programme also aims to provide guidance for computing-inclined students who could go down the path of cyber crime without the proper support and teaching.
It is hoped that this could have the effect of reducing the number of cyber criminals in the UK in the long term, as well as providing these students with a viable career path within cyber security.
