Trump Wants US Government To Prioritise AI

In his 2019 State of the Union address, President Trump stressed the importance of investing in emerging technologies are driving the creation of the Industries of the Future, and none more so than artificial intelligence (AI).

Federal Agencies have now been instructed to “prioritise AI investments” under an executive order signed by President Trump on Monday 11th February, with the intention of speeding the creation and development of AI in the US.

This Executive Order has begun the “American Artificial Intelligence Initiative,” which insists and encourages many US government agencies to spend more on AI development and analysis research in current and potential AI areas of work.

This initiative comes at a time of increasing concerns over China’s attempts to become the AI global power house and in historic terms it follows John Maynard Keynes predictions of technology job disruptions “due to our discovery of means of economising the use of labour outrunning the pace at which we can find new uses for labour” (Keynes, 1933, p. 3).

"Continued American leadership in AI is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States and to shaping the global evolution of AI in a manner consistent with our nation's values, policies, and priorities," President Trump has said in his Executive Order.

There are Five-main Objectives and begins with the First proposal:

  • First is to create AI investment and development in order to maintain US research and development in this area.
  • Second it aims to make Federal data and computing resources available to AI experts.
  • Third it aims to set AI Governance Standards.
  • The Fourth objective is to build a larger AI workforce.
  • The Fifth the aim is to promote an international environment that supports US AI companies against competitors and foreign adversaries.

The objective is to give AI enhanced development within the US as it is now believed that all areas of Artificial Intelligence now need prioritising as this will benefit Americans in terms of jobs, commercial activity and security.
