EDA's mission is to support EU Member States in improving European defence capabilities in the field of crisis management and to sustain the European Security and Defence Policy.

Major capability programmes include addressing critical shortfalls in: Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR), Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), Governmental Satellite Communication and Cyber Defence.

Cyber defence activities are in the areas of capability development and Research & Technology (R&T) including:

- Cyber Situation Awareness
- Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) Detection
- Digital Forensics for Military Use
- Cyber Defence Strategic Research Agenda (CSRA)
